Responsibilities

Position Summary:The Microsoft 365 Engineer designs, implements, and optimizes services and solutions related to the organization's Microsoft 365 environment. This role involves leading IT projects, developing project documentation, leading training, collaborating with project stakeholders/members, and participating in solution design with M365 senior engineers. An M365 engineer will also be responsible for driving process improvements and provides advanced support for complex issues. The M365 Engineer will be responsible for collaborating with various groups, mentor junior staff, and contribute to strategic planning. Project leadership abilities, organizational skills, strong accountability and excellent communication are crucial for success in this role. 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Infrastructure Support: 
  • Escalation Support 
  • Provide direct support to end-users and junior staff, addressing escalated technical issues and promoting best practices. 
  • In-Office Support 
  • Provide in-office support to end-users on in-office workdays. 
  • Security: 
  • Adhere to security best practices to ensure compliance with organizational policies and best practices. 
  • Conduct M365 stack related security audits (i.e. Sharepoint, Intune, etc.) per defined scope and schedule. 
  • Workflow Management 
  • Follow M365 team guidelines for proper workflow management ensuring assigned tasks and projects are on track 
  • Proactively communicate status updates and any roadblocks 
  • Microsoft 365 Management: 
  • Technical lead in the general administration of the Microsoft 365 stack.  
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate Microsoft 365 solutions with other enterprise systems. 
  • Oversee the completion of routine tasks related to Microsoft 365 services to ensure compliance and efficiency. 
  • Oversee M365 stack monitoring and troubleshoot system performance issues, addressing root causes of recurring issues to ensure stability.  
  • Propose solutions to improve monitoring and alert response that reduces the time to troubleshoot issues both for the Infrastructure team and service desk team. 
  • AI and Automation: 
  • Propose process automation solutions utilizing the Microsoft 365 stack (Power Automate, Copilot Studio, etc.) and related toolsets (FreshService, etc.) to implement solutions that enhance personal productivity, internal IT team productivity and business related productivity. 
  • Work with the Sr M365 engineer and M365 architect to lead M365 Copilot initiatives that utilize Copilot Studio and Power Automate to move both internal IT  and business related AI initiatives forward . 
  • Documentation & Process Improvement: 
  • Identify opportunities for optimization and drive improvements to existing Infrastructure processes. 
  • Maintain clear and detailed documentation of systems, processes, and technical configurations. 
  • Provide guidance to junior staff on documentation best practices to ensure consistency in documentation quality and documentation best practices are being followed. 
  • Leadership & Collaboration: 
  • Lead significant projects adhering to IT teams project management standards and best practices. 
  • Actively participate in the development and implementation strategic plans for Microsoft 365 related services to support long-term organizational goals. 
  • Mentor and train junior staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development. 
  • Collaborate with security, application, data, and service desk teams to coordinate major change events and team initiatives. 

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.  
  • Certifications: Certifications are preferred (Microsoft 365 Certified: Security Administrator Associate, Microsoft 365 Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator Associate, Microsoft 365 Certified: Teams Administrator Associate, Microsoft Certified: Power Platform App Maker Associate). 
  • Experience: 3-5 years of hands-on experience with M365 systems administration and support. 
  • Technical Skills: SME level knowledge of at least two significant M365 related services (Intune, Entra, Purview, Power Automate, etc.) and a strong working knowledge of other M365 core services. The M365 engineer must also possess a working knowledge of key technologies outside of the M365 stack including basic networking, domain management, server management, and related SaaS solutions.

  • Time Management: Possesses strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to balance support, project and administration responsibilities. 
  • Takes Ownership: Takes ownership of assigned responsibilities, projects and support duties. Takes assigned work from start to finish and delivers on committed dates. Proactively communicates any changes to commitments to impacted parties. Proactively communicates status updates to manager, project stakeholders, and IT team. 
  • Quality of Work: Ensures all work and work that falls under their purview meets high-quality standards through thorough testing, attention to detail, and adherence to established guidelines. 
  • Technical Writing: Utilizes strong technical writing skills to create clear and concise documentation for change logs, KB articles, runbooks and general technical requirement needs. Works with junior team members to help them improve their technical writing skills and ensure documentation is following established best practices. 

Clear & Professional Communication: Maintains a professional tone in written communications via email, Teams, and other collaborative tools, while communicating effectively, responding promptly, and seeking clarification when needed. 

  •  Personal Attributes: Adaptable, ethical, and results-oriented with strong time management skills. Ability to collaborate well with others and mentor those who are their junior. 

Work Environment and Physical Demands: 

  • Environment: 
  • Primarily office-based, with occasional site visits exposing the role to construction equipment, weather conditions, and variable noise levels. 
  • Physical Requirements: 
  • Frequent sitting, walking, standing, and occasional lifting or climbing. 

Travel Requirements: 

  • Regular travel within the organizational footprint, including daily commutes and occasional overnight stays.
